Rangayyan (electrical and computer engineering, U. of Calgary, Canada) focuses on developing algorithms for solving problems in the computer-aided analysis of biomedical signals. Beginning each chapter with certain type of problem of biomedical signals, he then presents signal processing, modeling, or analysis technique related to the problem, moving on to more sophisticated research approaches. Finally, illustrations of one or more real-life applications are demonstrated. Chapters discuss concurrent, coupled, and correlated processes; filtering for removal of artifacts; event detection; waveshape and waveform complexity; frequency-domain characterization; modeling biomedical systems; analysis of nonstationary signals; and pattern classification and diagnostic decision. The material is aimed at advanced engineering students. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com) More Reviews and Recommendations RANGARAJ M.
