Tucker (the author of The Eclipse Project) has written an engaging account of Benjamin Franklin's career and his famous, as Tucker argues, fictional story of using a kite in a lightning storm to demonstrate the existence of electricity. He describes the people connected with the study of electricity and scientific understanding of the era, then follows Franklin to France and England, describing the political and scientific company he kept there and the role the kite story played in advancing his reputation with both.
