Sampling histories of the canal both from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and from later periods, geographies of Colon Men from Barbados and Jamaica, Caribbean migration narratives, and letters written by former workers, Frederick (English, Boston College) uses recurrent depictions of Caribbean isthmian workers to build on conclusions available in existing narratives about the construction of the US canal in Panama.
