Abersek and Flasker (both: mechanical engineering, U. of Maribor, Slovenia) synthesize the findings of their quarter century of research into applying numerical methods to gears. They focus primarily on the model of cracks in the tooth root, mostly using the finite element method, but also presenting some boundary element method solutions for comparison. After an introduction and overview, they cover fracture mechanics, gear and gear transmission, cracks in the gear tooth root, contact problems on gears, and expert design and manufacturing systems for gear assemblies.
