In spite of the fact that groundwater resources play an increasingly central role in the economic, political, and environmental dynamics of the world's countries and regions, say Brentwood (environmental studies, California State U. at Sacramento) and Robar (political science, U. of Pittsburgh at Bradford), there has been little effort until now directed at constructing a unified framework for groundwater resource management that takes into account the various physical, cultural, and institutional challenges. Including sections covering North America, Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Australia and China, and Africa, they provide country case studies on groundwater management. The sections address the physical geography and demographics of the region; water use in the area; problems related to groundwater quality; the laws, politics, and policy surround use and distribution of groundwater; and conclusions and future implications.
