This work was originally published in German in 1998, by Birkhuser Verlag, Switzerland. Fischer (a columnist for the German astronomy journal Sterne and Weltraum) tells the story of the Galileo space probe and what it has revealed about the planet Jupiter and its orbiting moons. Beginning with the Pioneer and Voyager probes, he looks at how the Galileo project came to fruition and the many technical problems it encountered along the way. Switching gears in the middle of the work, Fischer than explores in detail the information gathered by Galileo during its two-year primary mission (including facts about Jupiter's ring and powerful magnetosphere) and finally concludes with a general scientific overview of the Jovian system. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos, the work also contains 32 pages of color plates detailing cloud formation on Jupiter, volcanic activity on the moon Io, the planetary surface of the moon Europa, and other facets of the Jovian system.
