Based on presentations made at the August 2002 224th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, this work brings together practitioners in both polymer science and nonlinear dynamics to discuss progress made in unveiling and exploiting the nonlinear dynamical aspects of polymer systems and to identify problems that merit further study. After a brief section on background, papers focus on applications for nonlinear dynamics in the making of materials and devices in the categories of gels, frontal polymerization, interfacial systems, phase separation, and oscillatory systems. Some specific topics include bifurcation analysis of polymerization fronts, nonlinear dynamics in surfactant systems, and controlled pattern formation in block copolymer systems.
