As an update of the 1985 report by the same name, this study develops current estimates for the load of petroleum hydrocarbons to the sea, evaluates the methods for assessing petroleum load, and discusses the concerns these loads represent. It also summarizes spatial and temporal trends in the release of oil to North American waters, and reviews studies on the biological effects of petroleum discharge in the marine environment.
