Using the derived equation of the state of a solid as a basis, this work describes the interaction of a solid with external energy fields. The major goal is to suggest new methods to control failure of solid engineering materials under a range of stressful conditions. Komarovsky (Scientific and Engineering Center for Non-Traditional Technologies, Ukraine) discusses how to control physical-mechanical properties from the point of design, at the stage of solidification and processing, and during service periods of machines. Chapters cover variations of state under dynamic and quasi-state loading conditions, solids in active media, physics of fracture and fatigue, diagnostics of technical state, and adaptation of materials and structures to service conditions.
