The conference was established to honor Japanese geotechnical engineer Akio Nakase (1929-2000), and the proceedings begin with a short biography of him and two of his papers. Keynote addresses cover the assessment of uncertainty in stability problems, and the 1964 Niigata earthquake in retrospect. The following 43 papers consider fundamental characteristics of clayey soils, estimating consolidation settlement in a large-scale reclamation, soil improvement methods in coastal areas, reusing dredged soils, the behavior of coastal structures subjected to earthquakes, and evaluating the stability of coastal structures.
